Preparation of a catalogue on Sri Lankan ethnic Jewellery designs to commercialize them for local and foreign returns
Sri Lanka claims an extremely sought-after assortment of ethnic jewellery designs. These designs may therefore be highly valued in both domestic and international markets. Archaeological and cultural sites, museums, and other establishments maintain traditional ethnic jewellery designs. However, there isn’t a comprehensive catalog of these designs that includes production guidelines, etc. Some investors could be prepared to put money into the sector, but they might not have the skills or designs needed for manufacturing. Thus, in partnership with the Department of National Museums (DNM), the Gem and Jewellery Research and Training Institute (GJRTI) has undertaken a project to create a comprehensive catalogue of Sri Lanka’s ethnic jewellery styles.
Objectives
The major objective of the project is to preserve the ethnic jewellery designs of Sri Lanka inherited since historical times, including the traditional cultural, conceptual designs in museums, historical drawings, temples, archaeological sites etc. To achieve this object, following secondary objectives are targeted.
- Studying the designs in Sri Lankan ethnic jewellery
- Publishing the ethnic jewellery collection and photographs at the National Museums as a detailed catalog
- Studying the cultural, sociological, economic, political, and technological perspectives revealed by Sri Lankan ethnic jewellery
- Preservation of the information in the detailed catalogue for generations to come
- Opening up this jewellery collection identified in the Annexure in this agreement to the research world for future research
- Making the catalog above available as a souvenir for visitors to the museum
- Making an income from this catalogue
