Value Addition of Low-Quality Gem Materials Through Gamma Irradiation and Commercialization
Sri Lankan gem mines produce a variety of gemstones, but many of them are of low quality and have limited market value. While traditional treatment methods are commonly used to improve gem quality, they are not always effective for certain low-quality materials. This research project aims to explore the use of gamma irradiation as a treatment method to enhance the color and quality of these gems. However, one of the main challenges in this process is the need for proper disclosure of the treatment and addressing the issue of unstable coloration in irradiated gems.
Objectives
- Develop a new gamma irradiation treatment method for low-quality gem materials.
- Establish a reliable disclosure method for gamma-irradiated gemstones.
- Improve color stability using nano-coating technology.
