Who Are We ?
The Gem and Jewellery Research and Training Institute (GJRTI) was established in July 1995 under Section 25 (1) of the National Gem and Jewellery Authority Act. As Sri Lanka’s premier government-affiliated institute in the gem and jewellery sector, GJRTI is committed to advancing education, specialized training, and applied research to support the sustainable development and global competitiveness of the industry. The Head Office is located in Kaduwela, serving as the central hub for administration, coordination, and innovation across all its programs and services.
To ensure wide accessibility and regional development, GJRTI operates 15 regional training centers throughout the country, including in Rathnapura, Kandy, Nivithigala, Galle, Aththanagalla, Jaffna, Naula, Batticaloa, Gampola, Maradana, Senapura, Laggala, NYSC Rathnapura, and Badulla. The institute offers a range of certificate and diploma-level programs accredited up to National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) standards. Courses encompass key industry areas such as gemology, jewellery design, gem cutting, jewellery manufacturing, diamond studies, and gem trading. GJRTI also collaborates with renowned local and international academic institutions, and is recognized as a Gem-A Accredited Teaching Centre, offering Gem-A Foundation and Diploma programs that pave the way to the Fellowship of the Gemmological Association of Great Britain (FGA).
A major pillar of GJRTI’s mission is its dedication to scientific research and high-tech analytical services. The institute conducts extensive research in areas such as location-based gem identification, color enhancement, and gemological innovation. GJRTI provides industry-relevant technical consultancy in developing equipment for gem mining, cutting, jewellery production, and heat treatment. Enhancing its role as a national research hub, GJRTI offers advanced analytical services using technologies such as Raman Spectroscopy, FTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy), UV-Visible Spectrophotometry, and ED-XRF (Energy Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence). These high-tech services support precise material characterization and quality assurance across the gem and mineral sectors.
The institute operates multiple specialized laboratories, including facilities for Gemmology, Geochemistry, Mineral Processing, and Advanced Analytical Testing, enabling comprehensive research and practical training. These state-of-the-art labs are designed to foster innovation, facilitate collaborative research, and ensure students and professionals have access to the latest equipment and methodologies in the field.
GJRTI also offers extensive training programs in professional skill areas such as color enhancement, High tech analytical Instrument analysis, hoalmarking techniques. These programs are delivered by a team of experienced professionals and academic experts who stay current with global trends through continuous professional development.
